International Women in Engineering Day 2026

We’re First for your Engineering Career

On 23rd June every year, International Women in Engineering Day marks the founding of the Women’s Engineering Society in 1919.

Engineering is a discipline that shapes societies, creating the technological world as we know it today. It is in everything around us. Its heavy engineering past has left a legacy that it is stereotypically a male occupation. Across the UK only 16.5% of the engineering workforce is female. Globally there is a shortage of engineering talent, so it is important that we bring more women into the industry from entry level apprenticeships and graduate programmes to senior women in complementary industries who can bring additional skills and perspectives.

First Bus are committed to ensuring that women have the encouragement and support to make a career in engineering with us.

Women in engineering at First Bus — their stories, their voice.

We offer a wide variety of Engineering roles across our business. As one of the largest public transport organisations in the UK we operate over 70 depots from Aberdeen to Weymouth, with 35,000 colleagues and well in excess of 4,000 buses.

Our commitment to Zero Emissions and an all-electric fleet by 2035 is well under way, with many depots already all electric – we have even repurposed over 100 diesel powered buses into electric vehicles. Our electric depots now offer commercial charging opportunities for business and personal use, and we constantly seek innovation and progress in all of our activities.

With such a varied mix of transport technologies and infrastructure, First Bus offers roles from apprentice engineers to senior level roles in management, business direction and strategy.
