That’s a really good question
Being Type 2 diabetic and treated with metformin tablets does not automatically stop you becoming a bus driver. In fact, many drivers successfully work in the industry while managing Type 2 diabetes.
For PCV (bus) licensing in the UK, what matters is that your condition is:
Well controlled
Not causing episodes of severe hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar)
Properly declared during your medical
As part of the licensing process, you’ll complete a medical form. They may request additional information from your GP, but being treated with metformin alone is generally not a disqualifier. The key factors are:
Stable blood sugar control
No recent severe hypos
Ongoing medical monitoringIf you’re considering applying for a trainee role, I’d recommend being open about your condition during the medical stage, it’s about safety and making sure you’re supported properly, not ruling people out unnecessarily.
Have a question of your own?
It says "Held a driving licence for 6 months". Does this mean simply having a licence for 6 months or driving experience of 6 months?
